I have a few brides who are planning hors d'oeuvres or dessert receptions. If that fits you and your fiancé style then you should do it. However there are a couple things you should keep in mind. Maybe choose a different time for your reception then a meal time otherwise guest will expect and be ready for a meal. 2:00-3:00 or 7:00-8:00 for your reception might be a better time.
Also keep in mind if you have a buffet set up then you will need to plan more than 5 pieces per guest. As some guest might take more than was planned and someone will get nothing.
If you are having hors d'oeuvres before your meal a common misconception is that no one will eat hors d'oeuvres. Keep in mind your guest are coming in your ballroom between 4 or 6 in the afternoon. They are hungry!! They will eat all of the hors d'oeuvres and be looking for more. Always over plan your hors d'oeuvres.
